Welcome to High Street Gateway Sign
Welcome to High Street. The Heart of Downtown GFW
High Street is more than a collection of buildings and businesses.
It’s one of Grand Falls-Windsor’s most recognizable downtown streets, home to local shops, restaurants, professional services, entertainment, community organizations and gathering places.
The Welcome to High Street Gateway Sign would create a prominent entrance feature that gives High Street a stronger identity while introducing residents and visitors to some of the businesses and destinations waiting to be discovered downtown.
Creating a Sense of Arrival
Great downtown districts let you know when you’ve arrived.
The Welcome to High Street sign would serve as a recognizable gateway to the street with a bold message:
WELCOME TO HIGH STREET
DOWNTOWN GFW
Rather than another conventional roadside sign, it should be designed as a permanent piece of downtown placemaking attractive enough to complement the streetscape and distinctive enough to become part of High Street’s identity.
The objective is to make people think:
“There’s more happening here than I realized.”
Featuring 16 High Street Anchors
The sign would feature approximately 16 anchor businesses, organizations and destinations located on or immediately connected to High Street.
Each participating anchor would be represented by its recognizable logo.
Together, those logos tell a much bigger story.
One individual business logo is advertising.
Sixteen different logos together communicate a destination.
They show residents and visitors that High Street contains a collection of places worth exploring; shopping, food, professional services, health and wellness, entertainment, arts, community services and more.
The sign effectively becomes a visual snapshot of what’s waiting further down the street
The sign should not resemble a traditional multi-tenant pylon.
The High Street identity remains dominant.
Business logos would appear in a clean, consistent grid beneath or alongside the main Welcome to High Street branding.
The hierarchy should be:
WELCOME TO HIGH STREET
Downtown GFW
Shop • Eat • Explore • Experience
Then the 16 anchor logos.
This distinction matters.
The businesses support the identity of the destination rather than the destination existing to advertise the businesses.
Choosing the 16 Anchors
Participation shouldn’t simply go to the 16 businesses willing to pay the most.
The initial group should help communicate the diversity of High Street.
Ideally, the sign would represent a balanced mix of:
Retail.
Food and coffee.
Health and wellness.
Professional services.
Arts and entertainment.
Community organizations.
Experiences and attractions.
Long-standing High Street businesses.
New businesses helping drive downtown activity.
The result should make someone unfamiliar with High Street curious enough to explore it.
A Business-Supported Community Project
The sign could potentially be funded substantially through sponsorship from the participating businesses.
For example, 16 anchor businesses could contribute an annual or multi-year participation fee.
Those contributions could help fund:
- Sign fabrication
- Installation
- Landscaping
- Lighting
- Maintenance
- Future logo updates
- Downtown GFW initiatives
This creates an opportunity for the private sector to help fund downtown improvements rather than relying entirely on municipal funding.
More Than 16 Businesses
The physical sign can’t realistically display every downtown business without becoming cluttered.
That’s where the broader Downtown GFW system becomes important.
A simple message could appear on the sign:
Discover 100+ Downtown Businesses
Gateway → Discovery → Wayfinding → Businesses
Make It Attractive at Night
The sign shouldn’t disappear when businesses close.
Subtle architectural or LED illumination could make the gateway visible during the evening without turning it into a digital billboard.
Landscaping around the base could further establish it as a permanent streetscape feature.
During Christmas and special downtown celebrations, seasonal lighting could integrate with the installation.
The result should feel like a landmark, not an advertisement.
Built to Change
Businesses change.
The sign should therefore be engineered with replaceable individual logo panels.
When an anchor business closes, relocates or no longer participates, its panel can be changed without replacing the entire sign.
This also allows Downtown GFW to periodically rotate participating businesses and keep the sign current.
