Downtown GFW Façade Improvement Program
Downtown GFW Façade Improvement Program
Better storefronts. Stronger businesses. A downtown we’re proud to show off.
Downtown is one of the first places residents and visitors experience in Grand Falls-Windsor. The appearance of our storefronts, buildings and streets plays an important role in how people perceive our community and whether they choose to stop, explore, shop and return.
The Downtown GFW Façade Improvement Program would encourage businesses and property owners throughout the downtown district to invest in improvements that make our commercial streets more attractive, welcoming and vibrant.
The goal isn’t simply to improve individual buildings. It’s to create a visible transformation of the downtown as a whole.
How It Could Work
Eligible downtown businesses and property owners could apply for matching assistance toward exterior improvements that enhance the public-facing appearance of their property.
Potential improvements could include:
- New or restored storefront façades
- Exterior painting and finishing
- New storefront windows and doors
- Attractive business signage
- Exterior lighting
- Awnings and canopies
- Accessibility improvements
- Landscaping and planters
- Restoration of historic architectural features
- Public-facing murals and creative design elements
- Improvements to vacant storefronts
Projects would be evaluated based on their impact on the downtown streetscape, with preference given to improvements that are highly visible from the street and contribute to the character of the surrounding area.
A Matching Investment
Rather than fully funding private improvements, the program could operate as a matching incentive.
For example, an approved business or property owner investing $5,000 into an eligible façade project could receive up to $2,500 toward the improvement.
This approach encourages private investment while allowing every public dollar to generate additional investment in downtown Grand Falls-Windsor.
More Than Building Improvements
A façade program can become part of a much larger effort to make Downtown GFW a destination.
Combined with improved wayfinding, downtown directories, public art, lighting, events, beautification, the Downtown Passport and the Meet Me Downtown campaign, façade improvements can help create streets people actually want to walk, photograph, explore and spend time in.
The long-term vision is simple:
One storefront improves. Then another. Then another.
Over time, those individual investments begin changing the appearance and perception of an entire street.
The Downtown GFW Façade Improvement Program would be about creating that momentum encouraging businesses, property owners, community organizations and government to work together toward a downtown that better represents the pride we have in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Invest in the storefront. Improve the street. Strengthen the downtown.
